Simon Menner spent two years digging through previously confidential paperwork and photos in the Stasi Archives. Simon is preparing a book about Stasi and the research work is as always more than important. And did Simon Menner stumble over secret material?
These pictures, among many others, shows how Stasi at a workshop are showing selected agents how to disguise themselves.
Look at the top photo, the figure clad in a red cardigan is said to be disguised as a sort of "mama´s boy with an innocent air", while the second photo shows a man in a fake moustache, tinted glasses and a Russian-styled hat, popular even here in the West in those days.
The East German Stasi had a reputation as one of the most repressive intelligence agencies in the world, yet these pictures show that some of their costumes were frankly amusing and ridiculos.
The guy at the bottom looks rather casual with his sunglasses and leather jacket, and looking at him now in the year 2013, I would guess that he had it easier than the other two?
Stasi did their work with disguised men and women, today we have intelligence agencies spying on us in a more sofisticated way.
If I list the most powerful and effective ones, like; NSA and CIA (USA), ASIS (Australia), BND (Germany), GRU (Russia), DGSE (France), MSS (China), Mossad (Israel), MI6 (Great Britain), ISI (Pakistan) and RAW (India) what do you say and think then?
