Julia Gillard the Prime Minister of Australia is not ready yet, still opposed to gay marriage, despite the fact that Barack Obama becoming the first US president to declare his backing of gay marriages.
From an American point of view, it is indeed a historic moment in the civil rights history.
All are equal, at last - almost.
Ms Gillard says that her views have not changed and she remains opposed to same-sex marriage in Australia.
One Australian senator says "The majority of Australians support marriage equality, yet our Prime Minister doesn´t. It´s time for our political leaders to accept that the Australian people have it right on this one, and currently Julia Gillard and Tony Abbott (who would guess otherwise?) are on the wrong side of history."
From my standpoint in Sweden, I find it difficult to understand, that Australia is on the wrong side of the fence.
Australians to me, seems far more liberal and less in the hands of conservative bible-believers, than the Americans does.

Ur ett amerikanskt perspektiv, ett, sannerligen, historiskt ögonblick i dess kamp för lika rättigheter. Där alla har samma rättigheter - nästan.
Julia Gillard förklarar att hennes åsikter inte har förändrats och står fast vid sitt motstånd mot samkönade äktenskap i Australien.

Som jag ser det ur ett svenskt perspektiv, är det svårt att hitta Australien på fel sida stängslet.
Australien i mina ögon, verkar så mycket mer liberala och mindre i händerna på de de konservativa bibeltrogna än vad amerikanerna gör.

"Gay marriage" needs some legal definitions. Clerics who have been taught that homosexuals should be burnt at the stake may be upset about it. The important thing is that a gay couple can get their partnership legally recognised. If they live together for decades and one partner dies, some distant relative may appear out of the woodwork and demand half of their common property as inheritance. It's a serious matter...while gay church weddings look more like something from the Gay & Lesbian Mardi Gras Parade.
