The coldest place on Earth - Världens kallaste plats.

Now, according to NASA, it is official: The coldest place on Earth is a high ridge on the East Antarctic Plateau. 

Ever been there? If not, you won´t be sorry...

...because on August 10, 2010 the temperatures plunged to e record low minus 93.2 degrees C. 

-93.2 C (-135,8 F), that´s the Cold Fact.

The previous record was minus 89 degrees C, set in 1983. Also in East Antarctica at the Russian Vostock Research Station.

Why is this record published three years after it was recorded?

Beacause, scientists recently made the discovery while analysing the most sophisticated global-surface temperature maps to date, developed "with data from remote sensing satellites including the new Landsat 8, a joint project of NASA and the US Geological Survey (USGS)."

Scientists at the Snow and Ice Data Center in Boulder Colorado says that they had a suspicion that the ridge in East Antarctica was likely to be extremely cold. 

Colder than the Vostok, "because it´s higher up the hill."

So to sum this up, don´t plan your holidays in these parts of the Antarctic region.

Det gamla rekordet kommer också från Östra Antarktis och den ryska forskningsstationen Vostock, där uppmättes minus 89 grader C i 1983.

Varför publiceras detta rekord mer än tre år efter det noterades?

Jo, forskarna upptäckte det när man analyserade de mest sofistikerade temperatur-kartorna av jordens yta, som utvecklats genom data från känsliga satelliter, bl a den nya Landsat 8 ett samarbetsprojekt mellan NASA och USGS (US Geological Survey).

Forskare på the Snow and Ice Data Center i Boulder Colorado har haft misstankarna att just denna rygg i Östra Antarktis skulle vara extremt kallt. T o m kallare än det är i Vostock "därför att det ligger högre upp på själva åsen."

För att summera, planera ingen semesterresa till dessa trakter av Antarktis.
