Wilma Rudolph, the most graceful athlete of all?

The Olympic fever has gotten many of us to spend hours in front of the tv screens.
In a few days the track and field will start with all the thrill and excitment that comes with it.
I am old enough to remember the graceful champion of the Rome Olympics 1960 - Wilma Rudolph.
Born premature and sickly as a child, Wilma had problems with her left leg and had to wear a brace.
With great determination and with help of physical therapy she was able to overcome her physical disabilities.
In high school she played on a baskeball team.
But a naturally gifted runner, she was recruted for the track team.
At the age of 16 ahe became the youngest member of the US team, she enrolled at Tennessee State University and began training hard for the Olympics.
In Rome, she won 100 meter, 200 meter and the sprint relay events, making her the most popular athlete of the games.
She retired from competition early and worked as a teacher and a track coach.
Wilma Rudolph died in November 1994 from brain cancer.
In 2004 the US Postal Service honored her by featuring her on a 23-cent stamp.
